Between 1.Electro Harmonix Electric Mistress flanger would be Davids main modulation effect. His debut 1. 97. 8 solo album and Final Cut in particular feature the pedal.By 1. 98. 1 he also incorporated two Boss CE2 chorus pedals. The pedal became a staple in Davids rig between 1.Chorus, flanger or phaser Obviously, only you can decide which one you want or perhaps you want all three. In terms of creating accurate and authentic Gilmour tones, you should keep all three and only use the right effect for the right era, as described above see also the David Gilmour Gear Guide for details on each album and tour.If you have to choose one you might want to consider which tones you think is most important.Neither can fully replicate the other but you might be able to do without one or two and still get the tones you want from your overdrives, fuzz and delays.A chorus is perhaps the most versatile, also for other genres and tones, but also the most subtle and perhaps a bit redundant for some tones.Flanger is very dominating and should be used with care. However, you might find it hard to nail authentic Animals, Wall and Final Cut tones without it.A phaser certainly doesnt cover a chorus nor a flanger but its a must for authentic WYWH tones and Have a Cigar in particular.A vintage style 4 stage phaser like the Phase 9.Uni. Vibe and stuff like Breathe, Any Colour You Like and Brain Damage.A good tip is to use modulations with care.Unlike overdrive, distortion and delay, a chorus or flanger can sound very dated and out of place if you use them too much or for the wrong reasons. All modulation effects sounds best if you use them for specific stuff and even better, to create unique tones that defines your sound and playing.Modulations on the pedalboard. There are different opinions on where modulations should go in the effect chain. Most guitarists want them after the gains either by placing them after the gain pedals or in the amps effects loop for bypassing the preamp stage.Others wants the modulations to be distorted and place them either before the gain pedals or in front of a distorted amp.Neither approach is wrong. Its just different ways of creating a tone.David Gilmour has always kept his amps clean and placed the modulation effects undistorted between the gain effects and the amps. This allows the phasers, chorus and flangers to sound natural and clean.Eddie Van Halen would place his Phase 9.MXR Flanger in front of a cranked Marshall stack. This created a distorted modulation and some very unique and easily recognizable tones.Jimi Hendrix would do a little of both.He often altered between having the Uni.Vibe before and after the fuzz but always in front of a distorted amp.Personally, I like having the Uni.Vibe and phaser in front of the gains and the chorus and flanger after all on a clean amp.Try different combinations and listen to how that fits your setup. All pedals listed below were tested on a Stratocaster featuring D Allen Voodoo 6.Seymour Duncan SSL5 bridge pickups and a Radix Deluxe PRS model with Seymour Duncan Phat Cat P9.Reeves Custom 5. 0 and Laney Lionheart L2.Chorus. Ive focused on David Gilmours setup with the Boss CE2.The more modern units like the Boss CE5, MXR Black Label Chorus and MXR Analog Chorus can also be tweaked for similar tones.Boss CE2. Warm, analog tones with a subtle mid range. The CE2 adds a sweet dimension to your tones, compliments the cleans and blends very well with heavier gains.A must for Davids 8.MTV era. The chorus tone is much more dominant than the two mentioned and few extra features allows you to tweak the circuit for anything from subtle analog chorus to wild psychedelic swirls.Perhaps not the typical Gilmour pedal but a very cool and unusual chorus thats well worth checking out.See my full review of the Waterfall here.Recommended placement after gains.Gilmour tones About Face PULSESmaller ampsbedroom level 1.Gilmourish. com score 81.EXH Nano Clone. Although very similar to the CE2, the Nano Clone has a unique tone on its own.A bit more transparent but also slightly darker sounding with a warm, smooth character.Like all EHX modulations, the Nano Clone has a nasty volume drop when engaged.Sadly, this is not fixed on the Nano.Nevertheless, its worth checking out as it fits Gilmours tones nicely.Recommended placement after gains.Gilmour tones About Face PULSESmaller ampsbedroom level 1.Gilmourish. com score 61.Mooer Ensemble King.Based on the Boss CE2 the Ensemble King feature the MN3.Compared to the CE2 this ones got an overall warmer tone but also a bit more mid range giving it a slight volume boost when engaged. Its also true bypass. The rate swirl is also a bit more defined but the featured volume control allows some fine tuning of the chorus by blending in the right amount of clean signal. An excellent budget alternative to the CE2.Recommended placement after gains.Gilmour tones About Face PULSESmaller ampsbedroom level 1.Gilmourish. com score 81.Boss RT 2. 0 Rotary Ensemble. The RT2. 0 is meant to be a Leslierotary sim but it sounds more like a very deep and articulated chorus.Personally, I find that to be the beauty of this pedal. The RT2. 0 can do a very convincing Yamaha RA2.Animals and Wall. Its not quite the same of course but the pedal has become one of my favourite modulations and a secret weapon for recording. The mix control allows you to blend in as much dry signal as you need for either smoothening out harsh distortions or adding that airy PULSE rotary.Recommended placement after gains.Gilmour tones Animals PULSESmaller ampsbedroom level 1.Gilmourish. com score 91.Flanger.
